Numbers and Telling Time

Hungarian numbers have several forms: cardinal numbers (“how many?”), ordinal numbers (“which one in order?”), and fractional numbers.

1. Cardinal numbers: Hány? / Mennyi? (“How many? / How much?”)

1 - egy, 2 - kettő (két), 3 - három, 4 - négy, 5 - öt, 6 - hat, 7 - hét, 8 - nyolc, 9 - kilenc, 10 - tíz. 20 - húsz, 30 - harminc, 40 - negyven, 50 - ötven, 100 - száz, 1000 - ezer.

Important: Nouns after numbers are always singular in Hungarian: öt autó (five cars), tíz diák (ten students). The number “2” has the short form két before a noun: két ember (two people).

2. Ordinal numbers: Hányadik? (“Which in order?”)
Ordinals are formed from cardinals with -dik / -odik / -edik / -ödik.

  • Exceptions: first - első, second - második.
  • Regular examples: 3rd - harmadik, 4th - negyedik, 5th - ötödik, 10th - tizedik.

3. Fractions: Hányad? (“What fraction?”)
Fractions use -od / -ad / -ed / -öd, similar to ordinals but without -ik.

  • ketted (second part / half), harmad (third), negyed (quarter), ötöd (fifth).

Telling time: Hány óra van? (“What time is it?”)
Hungarian often tells time as if the next hour is filling up. It uses negyed (quarter), fél (half), and háromnegyed (three quarters).

  • 6:00 - Hat óra van. (It is six o’clock.)
  • 6:15 - Negyed hét van. (Quarter past six; literally “quarter of seven.”)
  • 6:30 - Fél hét van. (Half past six; literally “half of seven.”)
  • 6:45 - Háromnegyed hét van. (Quarter to seven; literally “three quarters of seven.”)
  • To say “at what time?” (Hány órakor?), add -kor: Hatkor (at six), Fél hétkor (at 6:30).

  • A szobában három szék és egy asztal van. [There are three chairs and one table in the room.]
  • Én vagyok az első a sorban. [I am first in line.]
  • Kérek egy negyed kiló sajtot. [I would like a quarter kilo of cheese.]
  • Hány óra van? Pontosan dél van. [What time is it? It is exactly noon.]
  • Negyed nyolc van, sietnünk kell. [It is 7:15; we need to hurry.]
  • A vonat fél tízkor indul. [The train leaves at 9:30.]
  • Hány órakor kezdődik a film? Háromnegyed hétkor. [What time does the movie start? At 6:45.]
