The Special Ending -lak/-lek: I See/Love You

Hungarian has a special verb form used only when the subject is “I” (én) and the object is “you” (téged or titeket). This form uses -lak after back-vowel stems and -lek after front-vowel stems.

Examples:

  • Szeretlek. - I love you.
  • Várlak. - I am waiting for you.
  • Látlak. - I see you.
  • Kereslek. - I am looking for you.
  • Tanítalak. - I teach you.

This ending can express an entire English sentence, “I do something to you,” in a single Hungarian verb form.
