The Imperative Mood (-j): Formation and Assimilation
The imperative mood is used for requests, commands, and advice. Its main marker is the consonant -j, which is added to the verb stem before the personal ending.
As in the present tense, Hungarian has both indefinite and definite imperative conjugations.
1. Standard formation with no stem change
If the verb stem ends in a vowel or most consonants, except s, sz, z, zs, t, the -j remains clear.

Note: In the 2nd-person singular, both short forms (várj / várd) and full forms (várjál / várjad) are possible.
2. Assimilation: sound merging
Hungarian avoids difficult sound clusters, so -j often merges with the final consonant of the stem.
- Stems ending in -s, -sz, -z, -zs: -j becomes the same consonant, creating doubling.
- olvas + j -> olvass (read!)
- néz + j -> nézz (look!)
- főz + j -> főzz (cook!)
- Stem ending in short vowel + -t: -t and -j merge into -ss.
- mutat + j -> mutass (show!)
- szeret + j -> szeress (love!)
- Stem ending in long vowel or consonant + -t: -t and -j merge into -ts, pronounced like “ch.”
- tanít + j -> taníts (teach!)
- segít + j -> segíts (help!)
- Stems ending in -st, -szt: they merge into -ss, -ssz.
- fest + j -> fess (paint!)
