Present Conditional Mood (-na/-ne)
The present conditional is used for polite requests (“I would like…,” “Could you…?”), wishes (“If only…”), and conditions (“If I had time, I would go”).
It is formed by adding -na / -ne, or -ná / -né before certain endings, to the verb stem, followed by special personal endings.
1. Indefinite conjugation: no specific object

Important: In the 1st-person singular (“I”), the ending is always -nék, regardless of vowel harmony. There is no -nák form here.
2. Definite conjugation: with a specific object

Special “I-you” form: várnálak (I would wait for you), kérnélek (I would ask you).
3. Important irregular verbs
- van/lesz (to be) -> lennék / volnék (I would be), lennél / volnál (you would be), lenne / volna (he/she/it would be)
- megy (to go) -> mennék (I would go)
- jön (to come) -> jönnék (I would come)
- eszik (to eat) -> ennék (I would eat)
- iszik (to drink) -> innék (I would drink)
4. Usage: politeness and conditions
- Polite requests: use the conditional instead of a command. It often appears with tudna (could he/she/you formal) or szeretnék (I would like).
- Conditions with
Ha(“if”): the action could happen now or in the future under certain conditions. - Wishes with
Bárcsak(“if only”): expresses a strong wish.
