Comparative Constructions with mint and -nál/-nél

Hungarian has two main ways to compare two things.

Method 1: with mint (“than” / “as”)
This is the easiest pattern. After mint, the thing being compared stays in the base form.

  • Csaba erősebb, mint László. - Csaba is stronger than László.
  • Attila olyan szorgalmas, mint István. - Attila is as hardworking as István.

Method 2: with the adessive ending -nál/-nél
Instead of mint, you can add -nál / -nél to the second item. In that case, mint disappears.

  • Csaba erősebb Lászlónál. - Csaba is stronger than László.
  • A lakás olcsóbb a háznál. - The apartment is cheaper than the house.

Note: When comparing with pronouns, use special personal forms: nálam (than me), nálad (than you), nála (than him/her).

  • Péter idősebb nálam. - Péter is older than me.

“By how much?” (Mennyivel?)
To say “much” or give an exact difference, use -val/-vel:

  • sokkal jobb - much better.
  • két évvel idősebb - two years older.

  • A te autód gyorsabb, mint az enyém. [Your car is faster than mine.]
  • A te autód gyorsabb nálam. [Your car is faster than mine/me.]
  • Ez az utca sokkal hosszabb, mint a másik. [This street is much longer than the other one.]
  • A feleségem két évvel fiatalabb nálam. [My wife is two years younger than me.]
  • Az én szobám olyan kényelmes, mint a tied. [My room is as comfortable as yours.]
  • A repülő sokkal gyorsabb a vonatnál. [The airplane is much faster than the train.]
