Special Verb Types: -ik Verbs and Verbs Ending in -s, -sz, -z

1. Verbs ending in -s, -sz, -z, -zs
If the verb stem ends in one of these consonants, the 2nd-person singular form (“you”) uses -ol / -el / -öl instead of the standard -sz. This avoids hard-to-pronounce consonant clusters.

  • olvas (to read) -> te olvasol (you read)
  • keres (to search) -> te keresel (you search)
  • főz (to cook) -> te főzöl (you cook)

2. -ik verbs
This is a large group of verbs whose dictionary form, the 3rd-person singular, ends in -ik. Their main beginner-level feature appears in the 1st-person singular (“I”): instead of the regular -ok/-ek/-ök, they often take -om / -em / -öm.
