Hungarian Articles: a/az and egy

Hungarian uses articles before nouns, much like English. There are two main types: indefinite and definite.

1. Indefinite article: egy
This is the same word as the number egy (one). Use it when you introduce a new or unspecified item, similar to English “a/an.”

  • Mi ez? Ez egy toll. - What is this? This is a pen.

2. Definite article: a / az
Use this when the noun is specific or already known to both speakers, similar to English “the.”

  • a goes before words that begin with a consonant sound: a könyv (the book), a fa (the tree).
  • az goes before words that begin with a vowel sound: az autó (the car), az orvos (the doctor).

Important rule: Hungarian has no grammatical gender. Articles do not change for masculine, feminine, or neuter nouns because those categories do not exist in Hungarian.

No article: Articles are usually not used before personal names, city names (Budapest, Moszkva), and most country names. They are used before names of rivers, lakes, and mountains: a Duna (the Danube), a Balaton (Lake Balaton).

Mini-dialogue:

Mi ez? (What is this?)
Ez egy könyv. (This is a book. We mention it for the first time.)
Milyen a könyv? (What is the book like? Now it is specific.)
A könyv érdekes. (The book is interesting.)
